Our young offenders programme is operating on a smaller scale, thanks to the generosity of a grant from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. We are working with York Youth Offending Team and run this program for youngsters who are in a young offenders institute on a separate day to our mainstream education programme.
It runs very similarly to the mainstream education programme in terms of structure, with an emphasis on helping the youngster to gain employable skills and, if they behave well, a reference to help them have a better start upon release. We are finding that the act of coming to a place where they are encouraged is helpful in itself. The aim here is to prevent re-offending and improve the young persons situation, having a positive impact on society as a whole.
